Shelter Just Became Comfortable

As we have been observing the changes in our overnight shelter demographic, the average age of the population has increased, along with a large increase in the need of oxygen and other health issues among our guests. These factors make accessing a traditional top-bunk much more difficult than it used to be, which was impacting the capacity of individuals we could serve.

Additionally, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we noticed the lack of personal space among clients in each of the shelters was negatively impacting their mental health, a trend that has stayed consistent as the average length of stay has increased. The general population of clients we serve has also experienced an increase in mental illness, and with such a combination of factors, we knew a change in shelter quality was not just a good idea, it was imperative to moving forward.

With this in mind, we set out to give our bed system an upgrade. We knew we needed something with easy top-bunk access, easy oxygen access, and if possible, we wanted to give our guests a greater sense of privacy and dignity. Then our Executive Director, Micheal, found the Step-Up bed system.

After examining the design, we were able to construct our own version of this bed system. This was made possible by the special generosity of Hearts with Hands, as they provided both the bulk of the equipment and the space for us to construct the beds. We also received funding for accessories such as mattresses, pillows, blankets, and sheets from Asheville First Presbyterian Church and Asheville Rotary Club. In addition to easy-access and increased comfort, each bed also has 3 walls surrounding it, a reading light, toiletry shelf, and locker on the outside wall.

Because of support like yours, our shelter clients are able to work on their goals and change their lives. Overnight shelter is so much more than providing a bed, it is restoring dignity to someone who might have lost it a long time ago. From all of us here at the Rescue Ministry, thank you for making shelter more than a bed.
